September 2009 Newsletter

Here in Southern California we have experienced the largest forest fire ever. In fact, as I write this, the Station fire is still burning and is only 89% contained. We watched in horror as this out of control fire has burned 160,000 plus acres of timber and growth, is responsible for the death of two brave firefighters, has destroyed 89 homes and almost took out the observatory on Mt. Wilson.

For days, images of the devastation have burned in our minds, but there is one I saw, seen by only a few perhaps, but it captured me. It was a short clip by a newscaster on a field report. The camera panned around showing remains of a structure, trees and brush reduced to chunks of burned limbs and ashes. Then the camera came to rest on a wooden cross, standing untouched in the midst of utter destruction. Even the reporter was amazed and declared that cross a miracle, and yes it was!

I reflected how we as Christians are people of the cross. Christian in Pilgrim’s Progress came to the cross and there his heavy burden fell from his back and rolled off down the hill. Reminds me of a hymn we used to sing in church in my younger days. ‘At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, and the burden of my heart rolled away. It was there by faith I received my sight, and now I am happy all the day’.

For two thousand years the cross has stood over mankind, pointing the way to Christ and eternal life with Him. Many have despised and hated what it represents. It is truly an offense to those who disbelieve. Armies have marched against it, nations have ignored and ridiculed the cross of Calvary, yet, still it stands, just like that cross in the fire! Untouched and solid, towering over the wreckage of time.

However, I think we can become complacent as we view and think about the finished work of the cross. Let us not forget what was at stake in the redemption of every believer. There is another song that I have never forgotten that powerfully tells of the battle fought on Calvary: ‘There’s a line that’s been drawn through the ages. On that line stands an old Rugged Cross. On that cross, a battle is raging, for the gain of man’s souls or its loss’. Then a cry arises: ‘It is finished! The battle is over’. And by the shedding of His blood, Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins.

But wait! Christ’s body was placed in a tomb, and if He was still in that tomb then the strength and impact of Christianity would have ended at the cross. But Praise God, Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the third day and has been alive from that moment to this. He lives forever more and because He lives– we live! Hallelujah!

That’s the message we take to people in the media. Jesus Christ is the way, and we lift Him up crucified and risen. Yes, we are a people of the cross.

The work of a chaplain is not openly seen as some ministries, because much of our work for the Lord is confidential in respect to the people we pray with and counsel, and is always behind the scenes. Still, the Lord has used Media Focus in many ways to touch and influence lives. We minister to anyone the Lord places in our path. There is no difference of status or position, as all are equal to us, and we minister to their particular needs.

The summer was busy and difficult as we were bombarded with needs and struggles of so many people. We praise the Lord for His wisdom and strength as we helped and encouraged each one. In all of it, we daily sensed and were refreshed by all your prayers, encouraging phone calls and emails. Thank you from the depths of our hearts! Please let us hear from you!

What the Lord has taught us, is to share our needs before the Lord with you and trust our Father to speak to hearts. If you are able to help this ministry and us as its chaplain, we are confident and grateful you will do so. May He grant all of us a spirit of giving.

Thank you so much and may God Bless you.

We love you in Christ,
John and Patty
